How it works
The tip is a percentage of the bill. It is added to the bill to give the total, and the total is then divided equally between everyone paying.
Tipping customs are very different around the world. In some countries a service charge is already on the bill and no extra tip is expected, while in others 15 to 20% is normal. Check the bill and local custom before adding a tip.
Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100 Each person pays = (bill + tip) ÷ people
Worked example
Two friends have a bill of 64 and want to leave 15%. The tip is 64 × 0.15 = 9.60, so the total is 73.60.
Split two ways, each person pays 36.80.
Good to know
- The split is equal. If people ordered very different amounts, work out each share separately.
- Some people tip on the amount before tax. If you want that, enter the bill before tax.

How much should I tip?
It depends on the country. Around 15 to 20% is common in the United States and Canada, around 10% in much of Europe when service is not included, and tipping is not expected in some countries such as Japan.
Should I tip before or after tax?
Both are common. Tipping on the amount before tax is slightly cheaper. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Enter the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people. The big number is what each person pays, tip included.
What if a service charge is already included?
Then you usually do not need to add a tip. Set the tip to 0 to just split the bill.
